- GREENWICH TO BE ENGULFED BY TSUNAMI OF RAINBOW FOAM
Artist to send Tsunami through the streets of London for Greenwich + Docklands International Festival The streets of Greenwich will be engulfed in a ‘tsunami’ of multicoloured FOAM this year as part of a bizarre art installation. The Greenwich + Docklands International Festival will return to the borough from August 22 - September 11, but it’s the tidal wave of rainbow goo that’s got everybody talking. On September 3 and 4, German artist, Stephanie Lüning will unleash “Island of Foam: Version XVIII” and locals will wake to find their streets full of bubbles, which they’re welcome to interact with like a giant, Benidorm foam party. It's billed as a piece of ever-changing, live art, because Lüning will create the foam on site and alter the colours and amount of foam as she sees fit - to suit the 'architectural landscape.' The popular festival sees 18 days fo dance, theatre, art and circus performances across the Borough of Greenwich and the Docklands area. Other artists involved in the festival include Peter Hudson, who’s bringing a stop-motion skeleton rowing team to Canning Town. Charon is a 32ft high, rotating zoetrope of skeletons - based on the mythological ferryman who rowed souls to the afterlife - that can be powered by visitors to the festival. Each night, a team will move the wheel and, combined with strobe lighting, the skeletons will appear to 'move'. It was originally created for Burning Man festival, where it no doubt frazzled the minds of a whole generation of trust-fund kids on mushrooms, but makes its way across the pond in September for a much more family-friendly experience. If skeletons rowing departed souls to the afterlife sounds a little too much for a Sunday morning, there's theatre in the form of Fevered Sleep’s ‘The Sky is Filled With Thunder', an LED show by Crown_Ctrl and performances by dance troupes, House of Suarez and Cia Maduixa. Fancy it? You needn’t worry about FOMO (see what we did there?), because the festival is FREE, although some elements are ticketed to control numbers. Keep an eye on the festival's website, as new performances are being added on the regular. See you in the foam! Greenwich + Docklands International Festival, August 22 - September 11

- LEGALLY BLONDE KICKS OFF OPEN-AIR THEATRE SEASON
We absolutely do NOT object! Catch Elle Woods and her classmates on stage in London's iconic outdoor theatre. Woah! We haven’t been this excited since Gucci became a publicly-traded company. Regents Park Open Air Theatre opens this month and kicks off the summer with a stage adaptation of Legally Blonde. Elle Woods and her classmates will be taking to the stage amongst the trees of Regents Park for seven weeks, from May 13 - July 2, with tickets ranging from £25 - £65. For those who haven’t seen the movie, Legally Blonde follows Elle as she tries to win back her boyfriend by studying law. And the fashion-obsessed student soon discovers she’s not a ‘dumb blonde’ after all - and she becomes a Harvard-educated legal eagle. Once Elle Woods rests her case on July 2, there’ll be a quick turnaround with the production and stages and she’ll be replaced by Cruella De Vil when 101 Dalmatians opens on July 12. With a cast including incredible puppet-puppies, 101 Dalmatians is a family-friendly offering with matinee shows at weekends and certain performances also have BSL interpreters. The theatre offers a ‘relaxed performance’ on Sunday August 14, when sound and lighting levels are altered, chill-out zones offered and normal rules of theatregoing (such as having to remain quiet or sit still) do not apply, making it a more inclusive and suitable environment for those with learning disabilities or who are on the autism spectrum. Tickets are available now, but they won’t hang around once pictures of this idyllic setting start flooding social media, so get in there early and bag your seats. www.openairtheatre.com Like what you've read? - UK'S FASTEST INDOOR KARTING TRACK OPENS IN LONDON
Buckle up for the speediest race in the country at Canary Wharf's Cabot Square Adrenaline junkies, rejoice! London is now home to the UK’s FASTEST indoor go-karting experience, with Capital Karts opening a new track in Cabot Square in Canary Wharf today. The souped-up karts will reach eye-popping speeds in excess of 45mph - which Londoners will know is actually the fastest any vehicle has traveled in our gridlocked city for at least a decade - and they’ve thoughtfully provided racers with a 100-metre finishing straight so you’ll have the chance to put pedal to the metal and actually hit top speed. If you’re more of a going-round-corners kinda person (pfft), then fear not, they’ve got those, too - eighteen of them, to be precise, which will give you all the steering wheel-turning fun you’ve ever wanted. Oh, you like to overtake? Well OK, Max Verstappen, wrap your eyes around the 7.5m wide track, which gives you ample opportunity to tootle past your championship rival and give him a friendly wave as you go by. You won't find any safety cars here though, pal. The 270cc, Biz Eco volt GT karts aren’t just quick, they’re also fully electric, so you won’t come out coughing like a 20-a-day smoker and you can spend an hour or two finding out what it’s like to own a Tesla. They’ve got fully adjustable seats and pedals, hydraulic performance disc bakes and are ultra lightweight, which all sounds very much like we’re living in the future. Capital Karts offer three session types: Super Sprint (£28.50) for 15 minutes of racing; Double Sprint (48.50) for 2 x 15 minutes of racing; and Grand Prix (£60) for a 15 minute qualifying session followed by a 20 minute race with trophies awarded afterwards. Racers and spectators can unwind with stone-baked pizzas and refreshments afterwards and you could be back at your desk without creeping over your lunch hour. Now there’s a fast food lunch break we could get behind… Capital Karts, 15 Cabot Square, Canary Wharf, E14 4QS, www.capitalkarts.com Like what you've read? - SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE THEATRE ANNOUNCES SUMMER SEASON
It's one piece of bard news after another as EIGHT productions take place in 2022. The iconic Globe theatre kicks off its summer season of Shakespeare shows this week, and there are SIX regular productions to choose from, alongside an additional two family-friendly offerings. The South Bank theatre, which is a faithful recreation of the venue that hosted the world’s most famous bard in the early 1600s, will launch its 2022 schedule with Julius Caesar on May 4, before interspersing its performances with Much Ado About Nothing, which begins on May 6. From then on in, there’s no hanging about. Henry VIII launches on May 19, followed by King Lear on June 10 and The Tempest on July 22. Last but not least, I, Joan rounds up the regular productions when it kicks off on August 25. If you fancy trying to teach the children that Shakespeare is way more exciting than his status as a school textbook would suggest, The Globe will be running TWO family-friendly shows this summer. The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse - an indoor theatre housed inside Shakespeare’s Globe and inspired by the candle-lit venues of his time - will play host to Midsummer Mechanicals, a hilarious follow-up to Midsummer Night’s Dream. And if there’s anything that can improve the work of Shakespeare, it’s the (probable) addition of Mr Tumble, as the cast of CBeebies take on their own adaptation of As You Like it in the main theatre. Running for just four, 45-minute performances on August 8 and 9, it’ll be filmed and broadcast on CBeebies during the year, so dress up, get involved and show off your best dance moves. Here's the schedule in full: Regular Productions Julius Caesar: May 4 - Sept 10 Much Ado About Nothing: May 6 - Oct 23 Henry VIII: May 19 - Oct 21 King Lear: June 10 - July 24 The Tempest: July 22 - Oct 22 I, Joan: Aug 25 - Oct 22 Family Productions Midsummer Mechanicals: Jul 28 - Aug 21 As You Like It With CBeebies: Aug 9 & 10 www.shakespearesglobe.com Like what you've read? - LONDON IN THE SKY RETURNS THIS MONTH
Take your dining to new heights with a meal 100ft in the air... We all like dinner with a view. Penthouse apartments, restaurants in skyscrapers and a lunchtime fondue in a French Alps chalet all rank high on our list of places we’d quite like to chow down on some grub. How about dangling perilously on the end of a crane? Well, it’s not something that immediately springs to mind, but you might be about to rethink that. London In The Sky, the capital’s premier (only?) eating-on-a-crane experience is returning this month and it’s actually a hell of a lot better than it sounds. Diners choose ‘flights’ depending on their timing and food requirements, from breakfast to brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, cocktails and sunset dinner, before taking their seat at a table, fastening their seatbelts and being hoisted up into the sky for a culinary experience like no other. This time around, it’ll be held by the O2 Arena in Greenwich, which means gorgeous views across the Thames, Canary Wharf and westward towards the City of London - and the sunsets will be incredible. And the food certainly isn’t an afterthought, either. We’re talking three course dinner menus consisting of glazed featherblade of beef; dill cured salmon with seaweed crisp and smoked salmon tartare; sustainably sourced cod or baked vanilla cheesecake with red chilli rocky road. Brunches of egg hollandaise; vegetable hash with mushroom and tarragon sausage; or pancetta and poached egg on sourdough bread, all come served with two glasses of Freixenet Prosecco, and the cocktail evenings will see on-board bartenders mixing up drinks of your choice as cheesy tunes are pumped out 100ft in the sky. Flights take place every Wednesday to Sunday, between May 19 and August 29, so it’s time to start assembling your flight crew and getting ready for a dinner with a difference this month. www.londoninthesky.co.uk Like what you've read? - CZECH OUT THE WORLD’S LONGEST SUSPENSION FOOTBRIDGE
Sky Bridge Opens This Month for a 721 Metre Walk Between Two Mountains We’re struggling to even look at these photos of the world’s longest suspension footbridge, so can’t imagine looking down from the 95 metre high beast, which stretches nearly half a mile (721 metres) across two mountains. Sky Bridge 721 opens this month and floats between the Slaměnka and the Chlum mountains in Czech Republic’s Dolní Morava Resort in East Bohemia. If you’re brave enough to stomach the walk across the terrifyingly slender (1.2 metre wide) bridge and look down, you’ll be rewarded by breathtaking Kralicky Sneznik mountain views and hopefully, enough adrenaline to charge your jellified legs to the other side. The feat of engineering - our stomach is churning at the thought of putting this monster together - took two years and beats the previous record-holder, Arouca 516 in Portugal by 200 metres. And if insane heights and views are your bag, you can also check out the nearby Sky Walk, a 55 metre, wooden spiral walkway, looking out across Moravia and into neighbouring Poland. Still game? Then head to Sky Bridge 721 to find out more, you mentalist. Like what you've read? Why not subscribe to our free, monthly newsletter?
- CAMDEN MARKET GOES MEXICAN WITH LUCKY CLUB
Get ariba the hustle and bustle of Camden Market and enjoy a margarita in the sunshine Camden Market - once the favoured hang-spot for goths, emos, punks, rockers and just about every subculture ever invented, continues its regeneration at a breakneck speed with a new roof terrace serving up Mexican-inspired cocktails this month. We won’t pretend we’re not a little upset about our youth being erased with every new opening (we still can’t and won’t call Camden Embassy anything but The Barfly, even if it makes us sound like pensioners), but we’ll still be making our way to Lucky Club and reluctantly having a very nice time. What’s not to like? It’s a steel-and-glass pergola-covered bar nestled atop the independent stalls, overlooking Stables Market and it’s here for the long run, with a retractable roof and heaters, ensuring the summer months are cool and breezy and the winter nice and toasty. The menu promises butter poached lobster tacos, cheeseburger tacos and a list of margaritas long enough to have you seeing double by the end of the visit. What’s more, Lucky Hours from 5-6pm every Monday and Thursday challenge you to roll two dice. Hit a lucky 7 and your drink is free. Like what you've read? - LONDON'S FIRST LGBTQ+ MUSEUM OPENS NEXT WEEK
Granary Square will play host to history-making celebration of queer culture London will welcome its first EVER dedicated LGBTQ+ museum on Thursday May 5, when part of the Granary Square development in Kings Cross is given over to charity, Queer Britain. The space in Granary Square 2 will celebrate the capital’s important place in queer history, with a schedule of changing exhibitions across its four galleries. The opening show, simply titled Welcome to Queer Britain, will feature photographs and artefacts from the charity’s archives alongside work from Sadie Lee and Paul Harfleet. Sadie is an award-winning figurative painter whose work explores the representation of women in art, sexuality, gender and the ageing body. Her past work has included ‘A Dying Art: Ladies of the Burslesque,’ in which she painted fifteen former American burlesque dancers who were now elderly and retired; and ‘He was She,’ a collection of paintings of drag queen, Holly Woodlawn, who was immortalised in Lou Reed’s song, Walk on the Wild Side. Paul Harfleet is the artist behind The Pansy Project, an activist movement which since 2005 has planted pansies at the sites of homophobic attacks around the world. He often films his work, documenting the stories behind the attacks and the locations at which they occurred, before planting the flowers as a mark of respect and defiance. He released his autobiography, Pansy Boy in 2018 and the book closes with a series of hand-drawn birds, which have now become a central part of his art. Entrance to Queer Britain will be free and the charity’s website will detail all upcoming projects in the new space. - EUROSTAR TO EXPAND INTO GERMANY
Oktoberfest? A game at Westfalendstadion? A night at Berghain? Jump on the train! Einzelfahrt nach Berlin bitte! OK, so you probably won’t have to order your tickets in German given that you’ll be picking them up at Kings Cross, but it might be time to start learning the lingo in time for Eurostar’s planned expansion into fresh new European destinations. A new merger means you could soon jump on a train all the way to Berghain and then catch the sleeper back to London once you inevitably get turned away at the door. The Eurostar service currently links the UK to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and Lille, but has been given the all-clear to merge with fellow rail firm, Thalys, meaning the distinctive blue-and-yellow trains could soon be rocketing along their network of routes through Germany as well as additional destinations in France, Belgium and Holland. Passengers might still have to change trains to reach new destinations, the merger will make journeys easier - especially as you’ll be able to buy single tickets from one operator for the whole trip, and the connecting services can now be scheduled to work seamlessly with each other. No more pulling up to the station five seconds after your connecting train has left! The deal itself can’t have been too difficult to negotiate, given that both Eurostar and Thalys are already part-owned by French firm SNCF, but it still had to navigate its way past the European Commission for approval. Thankfully, they gave it the green light and it’s being hailed as one of the biggest revolutions for European rail travel in many years. It's a big move from Eurostar, who just a year ago were rumoured to be on the brink of bankruptcy due to the pandemic limiting international travel, but soon the iconic trains could be on the move in a major way. And there’s also hope that it will reduce unnecessary air travel and help towards climate change reduction. SNCF president, Guillaume Pepy said: “The challenge of the climate emergency and the demand for eco-responsible transport require an ambitious response. By proposing to pool the combined strengths of Eurostar and Thalys we want to respond to this challenge,” president of SNCF Guillaume Pepy said when the project was first proposed.” Pack your bags, the whole of Europe just got a little bit closer! picture credit: Roman Craft/Unsplash Like what you've read? - ROBBIE WILLIAMS TO LAUNCH SOTHEBY’S EXHIBITION OF HIS PAINTINGS
He’s loving easles instead, this May Take that, art world, because Robbie Williams is launching his first public exhibition of paintings at Sotheby’s next month. It seems he's not just passionate about aliens, tribal tattoos and making audiences sing his songs - Robbie is also a keen art fan. The prestigious auction house recently sold two Banksy works from his extensive collection for £7.7 million and are having him back in May for Black and White Paintings. The exhibition will feature 14 black and white paintings created in partnership with his interior designer friend Ed Godrich, as well as curated pieces by artists who inspire them both, including Grayson Perry and Damien Hirst. Robbie said: “Art is really whatever you want it to be. Just like music, it has the ability to soothe and provide company when you’re lonely. "Art and music have punctuated my ups and downs, but more importantly they both have the power to change how I feel in a moment.” Williams and Godrich have been painting together for five years and say their art owes a huge debt to Nineties rave culture. The singer started collecting art once he’d amassed enough dosh from the success of Angels, and likens his new art partnership to being in a band, explaining: "In music terms, Ed plays the piano, while I write the melodies and the words. To continue the metaphor, we also write songs separately and bring them together.” The singer sold artworks, hand-typed with two fingers and featuring well-known lyrics from his songs to promote his new gallery, which he intends to double as a nightclub he describes as “the opposite of Studio 54, which was exclusive and pretentious” and will play host to pyjama parties and Kindness club nights. So there you have it. If you’ll let him entertain you, Black and White Paintings will run from 13 - 25 May at Sotheby’s, 34-35 New Bond St, London W1S 2RP Like what you've read?
