THE ISLANDER FESTIVAL HITS LONDON
Month-long Family, Theatre, Comedy, Art, Music and Dance Events on the Riverside this July
A mini island has been fizzing away on London's Leamouth Peninsula, in the shape of the Good Luck Hope neighbourhood, brimming with creatives, from English National Ballet’s HQ to galleries and lightship recording studios. With so many cultural titans bursting from this riverside retreat, Goodluck Hope’s first Islander Festival has not disappointed, with a packed series of alfresco summer events for all ages, from sunrise yoga and drag bingo to ballet, Shakespearean walking theatre and wine tasting.
Family highlights include The Islander Carnival on 22 July, with street food and drink, live music, a craft market of independent traders, children's games and workshops. Families can also take part in the interactive, walking theatre performance of Treasure Island on 23 July, starting at Orchard Dry Dock and taking place around Goodluck Hope. Grown-ups can also enjoy a gaggle of cultural treats, including a Brush and Bubbles workshop at Trinity Art Gallery on 1 July, sipping fizz and painting canvases. Join The Walking Theatre Company on 2 July for an immersive, roaming performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream or head to a sunrise yoga session on 14 and 21 July, at the Lantern Room’s viewing deck.
Aussie Drag Queen, Sheila Simmonds will be bringing an evening of music and comedy on 19 July for Drag Bingo. And there’s a chance to meet the artists exhibiting at the launch of Trinity Art Gallery’s Summer Show on 20 July. Meanwhile, booze aficionados can enjoy the Mead and Honey Masterclass with beekeeping mead brewers, Afon Mel on 26 July or Wanderlust Wines' tastings of premium wines grown at high altitudes or islands like Sardinia and The Canary Islands, on 29 July.
